For this task, the class was asked to study 3 different magazines and consider a number of questions based on the reader:

Music magazine questionnaire

This is my music magazine questionnaire, this weeks homework task. I chose to use both tick boxes and written answers to give my questionnaire variety and allow people to give their own opinions.

3 inspirational texts;

This is my favourite cover. Mainly because the centered image is adele and i am a huge fan of her music but also because of the simplicity of the cover. I love that this particular magazine has only used one image, i think this makes the piece effective because the image is large and close up. I also like the simplicity of the colours, black, red and white. The ideas i intend to take and use in my magazine is the large centered image and the idea of 2 or 3 primary colours so they dont clash and look over the top.

Although this is a celebrity magazine rather than a music magazine, i love the layout and feel i could interpret some ideas into my magazine. Ok magazine is one of my favourite magazines and i am always drawn to the cover because of the bold colours and use of images. This magazine has chosen to use more than one image although one (the main story) is larger than the rest. I like this idea and i intend to use it on my cover, however my main image will be centered with the smaller images surrounding it.

I always love the cover of NME magazine because it always tries a different layout. This particular issue caught my attention because of the big, bold title in the centre, that cuts through the images. I also love that the NME logo is always large, i intend to make my logo big and eye-catching like this one. I also like the idea of the circle in the top-right corner that tells us important features of the issue, it gives the magazine something extra. I think i will use this idea on my cover, but perhaps use a different shape.

Magazine analysis

Who are the audience/how do we know this?
Looking at the cover, straight away i would assume this magazine was created for a female audience, more specifically women aged from 18-30. This is because the magazine consists of a large, centered image of female artist and role model 'Beyonce'. The reason this magazine would appeal particularly to women is that many girls aspire to be like Beyonce. The fact that the magazine includes the topic 'getting over your ex' suggests that it is appealing to young adults, as most people over the age of 30 are (stereotypically) married or in a happy, long-term relationship. Also, we notice 'who's watching your kids' in large, capital letters indicating that it is not for young children. The fact that the magazine includes '11 green jobs' and 'does work make you angry' also suggests that this does not appeal to a young register.

What is the text selling?
It appears that this magazine is offering information and advice about relationships and work. It also includes '9 tips for managing your money' which would help sell the magazine as many people are struggling financially due to the economic climate and would probably find this helpful.

What attitude/tone does it have?
I think that the cover of this magazine portrays a very strong positive attitude, this is because it includes advice about 'getting over your ex' which will perhaps help those that have had a relationship breakdown. Also the image of Beyonce comes accross as strong and dominant as her facial expression is very distinct and she is holding up her fist.

What is valued/ believed in?
Obviously saving money is valued strongly as the magazine includes '9 tips for managing your money'. Family also comes accross as an important topic illustrated by the fact that 'whos watching your kids' is in capital letters.

Introduction

I am an AS level media student and  I created this blog to share my work and publish my progress throughout the course. I intend to use my blog to upload my coursework, the work i am set in class and homework tasks. The first piece of work i will upload is my preliminary task, which consists of a college magazine cover and contents page. I will also upload my first piece of coursework, a music magazine. My magazine genre will be both pop and rock and my decision was inspired by Q and rolling stone. I am particularly interested in this type of magazine because i enjoy both pop and rock music and so i feel i have better knowlege in this subject area. In my piece, i will use my own original images instead of taking images from the internet. I chose to create a music magazine rather than a film trailer as i feel i am more familiar with maqazine techniques therefore i can complete this work to the very best of my ability. I would like my coursework, when completed, to look professional and so i wish to use photoshop. I found that when i created my college magazine on microsoft publisher it did not look professional. I plan to use a variety of techniques in my coursework, including different fonts and colour contrasts, to access the highest marks possible and i am willing to research as much as possible to help me do so.
